Set up your first inventory record
You need a list of items, a location for each one and a way to record a count. The goal is a record you will actually update, not a perfect database.
1. Choose a SKU pattern
Use a short, readable code that includes category and a sequence.
Avoid codes only one person understands.
2. Record the location
A shelf, bin or room is part of the record.
Without a location, a count becomes a search.
3. Set the first quantity
Count once and mark the date and counter.
The first count is your baseline.
4. Pick a reorder point
Use lead time and normal usage, then check it monthly.
Write the trigger where the order is made.
A QUICK CHECK
Before you begin
- Every active item has a SKU.
- Every SKU has a location.
- The first count has a date.
- The reorder point has an owner.
